Environmental, social & governance

At BBT fiberoptic we work towards running a healthy and transparent business, with respect for the impact we have on people, the environment, and the climate. We are not there yet, but here you can read about the first steps we have taken.

We aim to be transparent and will therefore regularly update this page with new initiatives and results. You are also very welcome to contact our ESG Manager, Rune Leerbek,

Focus on reducing our carbon footprint.

Since we are a company that imports products from all over the world to the Danish market, a significant portion of our total CO2e emissions stems from transportation.

We are therefore focused on initiating several efforts to reduce our CO2e emissions related to the transportation of our products. These efforts include closer collaboration with our carrier to reduce emissions through route optimization, using lower-emission fuels for sea and air freight, and finally, the possibility of offsetting our emissions through recognized climate protection projects.

Additionally, we are engaging in dialogue with our customers to consolidate their orders so that we can deliver in one or two bulk shipments instead of several smaller ones. In this way, we hope that, together, we can help reduce the number of kilometers driven in connection with product deliveries.

Another focus area for us is how we consume energy in our buildings in Holte and Sunds, and more importantly, how we can optimize our consumption to reduce our emissions.

We are therefore exploring the possibility of entering into a PPA (Power Purchase Agreement), which means that we will take part of financing the construction of a new solar or wind farm in Denmark. This would allow us to cover part of our electricity consumption with renewable energy while also contributing to adding more green power to the overall electricity grid.

Our products

It is important to us that our products are manufactured with respect for the environment and climate, and that this takes place under proper conditions regarding safety and workers’ rights. Therefore, we engage in dialogue with our suppliers about signing our Supplier Code of Conduct, which includes questions about working conditions and environmental impact. We do this partly to build closer relationships with our partners and partly to make informed decisions about which suppliers we want to collaborate with.

We also aim to create greater transparency around our products, allowing our customers to consider the environmental impacts of the products they choose. Therefore, we will conduct life cycle assessments of our own products and gather the necessary data from our suppliers on their products.

Extending the lifespan of instruments

An integral part of our company is our service department, where we service and repair instruments on a weekly basis. We also share our knowledge and expertise through courses, where our specialists help customers maintain their instruments. This not only provides great service to our customers, but it also helps extend the lifespan of the instruments, ensuring we continue to maximize the use of the materials in the product.

We have expanded this approach with our Refurb Selection, where we take a selection of used splicers and measuring instruments, refurbish them, and offer them to our customers once again. This way, we utilize the full potential of the instruments and ensure that the materials’ lifespan is maximized before they are responsibly disposed of.

EcoVadis

This year, we reported for the first time to the global evaluation platform EcoVadis, which conducts a thorough assessment of how we work with sustainability.

Their evaluation is based on 21 sustainability criteria across four themes:

– Sustainable procurement
– Labor & human rights
– Environment
– Ethics

In June 2024, the results of our evaluation were published, and we were awarded a gold medal with a score of 70 out of 100 points. This places us among the top 5% of companies globally that have achieved gold certification.

It is important to emphasize that EcoVadis does not measure how, but rather provides a tool to assess how we manage sustainability within the company, identifying both strengths and weaknesses. Nevertheless, we are proud of the result and pleased to be on the right track.
